Top Soil

Sustainable Topsoil, Made in Lincolnshire

At Welton Aggregates, we believe the waste generated on one site is a valuable resource for the next. Alongside our ready-mixed concrete and recycled aggregate operations at Welton and Louth, we produce high-quality, screened topsoil from site-derived waste — turning material that would otherwise go to landfill into a product that supports new developments, landscaping schemes and land remediation projects across Lincolnshire.

Our Process

Every load of material that arrives at our facility begins with rigorous assessment. Before any waste is accepted for processing, it is classified and characterised in line with WM3 guidance, ensuring we understand exactly what we’re handling and that it’s suitable for reuse. Only non-hazardous, appropriately classified material is taken forward into our topsoil production process.

From there, material is screened to remove contraries — stone, roots, rubble and debris — and graded to produce a consistent, workable topsoil suitable for amenity, landscaping and engineering fill applications. Where a site’s waste material doesn’t meet the bar for our standard manufactured topsoil routes, we don’t cut corners: we assess the correct regulatory pathway for that specific material, whether that’s an established exemption or a bespoke permit route, before it goes anywhere near production. It’s this discipline — checking the regulatory position as carefully as we check the material itself — that sets our process apart.

Quality & Compliance

Recycling construction and excavation waste into topsoil isn’t just about good screening equipment — it’s about getting the legal and environmental framework right first. Our team works through the applicable waste exemptions and permitting requirements (including routes such as SR2022 No.1 for the use of waste in land treatment) on a case-by-case basis, ensuring every batch of topsoil we produce has a clear, defensible compliance history behind it.

This rigour means our customers — developers, contractors and landscapers — can specify our topsoil with confidence, knowing it has been through a proper, traceable classification and production process from source to delivery.

Circular by Design

As part of the same group as Welton Civils, our groundworks and civils arm, we’re able to close the loop between construction activity and material recovery — taking suitable site-won material and giving it a second life as topsoil, rather than sending it to landfill and importing virgin material in its place. It’s a model that reduces cost, reduces carbon, and keeps valuable resources working in Lincolnshire.

Applications

Our topsoil is suitable for:

  • Housing and commercial development landscaping
  • Public realm and amenity schemes
  • Agricultural and horticultural restoration
