Welton Civils

Groundworks and Civil Engineering Specialists

Welton Civils delivers a complete range of groundworks and civil engineering services to housebuilders, developers, principal contractors and private clients across Lincolnshire and the surrounding region. From the first cut of earth on site to the final finish on a decorative driveway, our teams are equipped, trained and experienced to take a project from consultation through to completion, on time and to specification.

We invest in modern plant, a skilled workforce and rigorous site management, and our reputation has been built on reliability, technical competence and a straightforward approach to getting the job done properly. Whatever the scale or complexity of the works, Welton Civils has the plant, people and processes to deliver it safely and efficiently.

No two sites are the same, and we take the time to understand ground conditions, design intent and programme constraints before work ever starts on site. That approach, backed by an in-house team rather than a patchwork of subcontractors, means fewer handover delays, clearer accountability and a single point of contact for clients from enquiry to sign-off.

Sectors

We Serve

Our client base spans the full range of the construction industry, and our teams are equally at home on a single self-build plot as they are on a multi-phase development:

  • Residential developers and housebuilders — plot-level and estate-wide groundworks packages
  • Commercial and industrial — hardstandings, yards, access roads and service infrastructure
  • Principal contractors — groundworks subcontract packages delivered to programme
  • Agricultural and rural clients — drainage, hardstandings and yard construction
  • Private and self-build clients — driveways, patios, foundations and land drainage

Our Services

Cut and Fill

Every successful build starts with a well-executed cut and fill operation. Our teams carry out precise excavation and earthmoving to bring sites to the design levels required for construction, balancing material movement across site to minimise waste, haulage and cost wherever possible. Using GPS-guided machine control and experienced operators, we manage everything from small-scale level changes to large volume earthworks on major housing and commercial developments, always working to tight tolerances and in line with geotechnical requirements.

Our capability in this area covers:

  • Topsoil strip, storage and reinstatement
  • Bulk and detailed excavation to formation level
  • Cut/fill balancing and haul road management to reduce off-site muck away
  • Ground preparation and compaction for roads, plots and hardstandings
  • Excavation and disposal of unsuitable or contaminated material, where required
  • Site surveys and level checks to confirm design compliance before handover

Site Clearance and Enabling Works

Before cut and fill work can begin, many sites require clearance and enabling works to remove obstructions and make the ground ready for construction. We undertake vegetation clearance, demolition of redundant structures, removal of existing hardstanding and the identification and management of any buried obstructions, working closely with ecologists, arborists and utility providers where a site has particular constraints.

Deep Drainage

Effective drainage is fundamental to any development, and our deep drainage teams are experienced in the installation of foul, surface water and combined drainage systems to significant depths, including attenuation systems, soakaways, pumping stations and outfalls. We work with all common pipe materials and jointing systems, install to current Building Regulations and Sewers for Adoption standards, and carry out excavation support and dewatering as required to install safely in challenging ground conditions. Our drainage teams coordinate closely with utility providers and consulting engineers to ensure systems are installed right first time and ready for adoption.

Our deep drainage capability includes:

  • Foul and surface water sewer installation, including deep excavations
  • Attenuation tanks, cellular storage systems and soakaway construction
  • Pumping station installation and connection
  • Headwalls, outfalls and watercourse connections
  • Excavation support systems, including trench boxes and shoring, for safe working at depth
  • Dewatering and groundwater management in wet or unstable ground

We understand that drainage is often the most technically demanding and highest-risk element of a groundworks package, and our supervisors are experienced in managing confined space entry, excavation safety and the coordination of multiple trades working around live drainage runs.

Concreting, Including Printed and Coloured Concrete

Welton Civils works alongside Welton Aggregates, giving us direct access to quality-assured aggregate and ready-mixed concrete supply for every project we undertake.

Our concreting division covers everything from structural foundations, slabs and hardstandings to high-quality decorative finishes. We supply and lay reinforced concrete for footings, floor slabs, retaining structures and road construction, with attention to correct curing, jointing and finishing on every pour.

For clients looking for a more distinctive finish, we also specialise in printed and coloured concrete, offering a durable, low-maintenance alternative to block paving and traditional surfacing for driveways, patios and public realm areas. Our printed concrete work uses professional-grade stamping mats and colour hardeners to replicate the appearance of natural stone, brick or slate, while our coloured concrete options allow finishes to be matched to a client’s design scheme. Every decorative pour is finished with a protective sealant to preserve colour and pattern definition for years to come.

Our concreting service covers:
  • Structural concrete — foundations, footings, ground beams and retaining structures
  • Floor slabs and hardstandings — reinforced slabs for domestic, commercial and industrial use
  • Road and kerb construction — in-situ concrete roads, kerbing and edging to adoptable standards
  • Printed concrete — stamped patterns replicating stone, brick, slate and cobble finishes
  • Coloured and coloured/exposed aggregate concrete — integral colour and surface treatments to suit any design scheme
  • Concrete repair and resurfacing — restoring worn or damaged existing concrete surfaces

We use quality-assured ready-mixed concrete supply, correct reinforcement detailing and proper jointing and curing practice on every pour, ensuring finishes are durable and structural elements perform as designed over the long term.

Groundworks

As all-round groundworks contractors, Welton Civils undertakes the full spectrum of below and above-ground works needed to prepare and service a site. This includes site clearance and enabling works, excavation for foundations and substructures, hardcore and sub-base construction, kerbing and surfacing, service ducting, and the installation of utilities infrastructure. We routinely work alongside architects, structural engineers and other trades to ensure groundworks are sequenced correctly and integrate seamlessly with the wider build programme, and we are equally comfortable delivering standalone packages or acting as principal contractor across an entire site.

Our groundworks service covers:

  • Foundation and substructure excavation
  • Sub-base and hardcore construction to roads, footpaths and plot areas
  • Service trenches and ducting for water, gas, electricity and telecoms
  • Kerbing, edging and block or flag paving
  • Manhole and inspection chamber construction
  • Landscaping groundworks, including retaining walls and land shaping

Plant and Fleet

Welton Civils maintains a comprehensive fleet of excavators, dumpers, rollers and ancillary plant, ranging from mini-excavators suited to confined domestic sites through to larger machines for bulk earthmoving and deep excavation. Our machines are backed by GPS machine control technology on larger schemes, supporting the accuracy of cut and fill operations and reducing rework. Combined with our own haulage capability, this allows us to keep projects moving without reliance on third-party plant hire, giving clients greater certainty over programme and cost.

Health, Safety and Quality

Health and safety is treated as a priority on every site we work on, not an afterthought. Our operatives hold current CSCS/CPCS certification appropriate to their role, and our supervisors carry out regular site inspections, toolbox talks and risk assessments to keep works compliant and safe. We produce method statements and risk assessments for every package of work, and we operate to current Building Regulations, British Standards and, where applicable, Sewers for Adoption requirements, giving clients and their consulting engineers confidence in the quality of the finished works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work directly for private clients, or only on larger developments?

Both. We regularly carry out smaller packages such as driveways, patios and land drainage for private and self-build clients, alongside larger contracts for developers and principal contractors.

We can deliver a complete groundworks package from enabling works through to finished surfacing, or take on standalone elements such as drainage or concreting alone, depending on what a project requires.

Printed concrete uses textured mats pressed into the surface before it cures, creating a pattern that replicates materials like stone or brick. Coloured concrete refers to the pigment mixed through or applied to the surface; the two are often combined for a fully decorative finish.

We operate our own fleet of excavators, dumpers and ancillary plant, supported by in-house haulage, which helps us keep projects on programme.
